Mafia III PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are out now, almost exactly ten years after the game first launched. 2K and Hangar 13 released native current-gen builds of Mafia III: Definitive Edition on October 8 with 60 FPS gameplay. If you already own it on PS4 or digitally on Xbox One, the upgrade costs nothing.
Who gets the free upgrade
On PlayStation, the deal is simple. PS4 owners get the digital PS5 version free through the PlayStation Store, whether they own the disc or a digital copy. On Xbox, only digital Xbox One copies qualify, and 2K’s announcement says physical Xbox One discs are not part of the offer.
If you got Mafia III inside Mafia: The Omerta Collection or Mafia: Trilogy, search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition on your console’s store. Depending on when and how you bought it, you may need to add the new version to your library yourself, at no cost. If the store doesn’t recognize that you own it, 2K says to open a support ticket.
The big catch is saves. They don’t transfer from PS4 to PS5 or from Xbox One to Series X|S, so the native version means a fresh start in New Bordeaux.
What’s better on current-gen
Gameplay now runs at 60 FPS. A lot of Mafia III’s cutscenes are rendered in real time, so those hit 60 too, while a handful of pre-rendered movies stay at 30. The update also fixes story missions where players could get stuck at checkpoints, cutscenes, or objectives in both the campaign and the DLC, cleans up trophy and achievement tracking, and cuts down on lighting glitches and plant pop-in while you drive.

The Definitive Edition is the full package: the base game, all three story DLCs (Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, and Sign of the Times), plus the Family Kick-Back Pack and the Judge, Jury & Executioner Weapons Pack. Mafia III is rated M for Mature.
PC gets a patch, and there’s a big sale
PC players got an update of their own on Steam. It fixes progression blockers in missions like “Get Enzo Conti,” “Kill Tommy Marcano,” and the Epilogue, adds frame-rate caps at 120, 144, 180, and 240, and brings a toggle for window borders along with better multi-monitor handling.

2K is also running 80% off on PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam, which puts it at $5.99 on the PlayStation Store and Steam right now. The PlayStation deal ends October 21 at 11:59 p.m. PT, Steam’s ends October 22 at 10 a.m. PT, and the Xbox Series X|S version stays discounted until October 29 at 10 a.m. PT. If you’d rather own a DRM-free copy, GOG sells the Definitive Edition too, but at its regular $29.99, and 2K’s PC patch notes only name the Steam version.
If you own Mafia III on PS4 or digitally on Xbox One, grab the free upgrade and plan on a new save. If you skipped it in 2016, six bucks for a 60 FPS version is about as cheap as Lincoln Clay’s story is going to get.
