A woman in a gray knit cap stares into the dark in a live-action scene from Tenebris Somnia

Tenebris Somnia launches today at 10am PT, and it mixes two kinds of horror in one package: a retro 2D survival horror game that looks like it came off an 8 or 16-bit cartridge, plus live-action cutscenes shot with real actors and practical effects. New Blood Interactive is publishing it, and Saibot Studios, led by Argentine filmmaker Andrés Borghi, made it.

Pixel scares, real-world footage

The game plays like the classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill formula squeezed into side-on pixel art. You explore cramped rooms, solve puzzles, manage a small inventory, and fight off creatures with whatever you can find.

The twist is in the cinematics. At key points the story cuts to live-action sequences that show events from a completely different point of view, filmed by an award-winning crew from Argentina. The pitch is simple and unsettling: what if these aren’t just nightmares?

Where to buy

PC: Tenebris Somnia is on GOG.com for $24.99 with a 20% launch discount to $19.99, so you can own a DRM-free copy, and the same $24.99 list price with 20% off to $19.99 is on Steam. A free demo is still available if you want to try it first.

Consoles: It launches on PlayStation 5 at $24.99 ($19.99 with PS Plus), Xbox Series X|S at $24.99 on sale for $19.99, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, where the Switch eShop lists $24.99 with a launch price of $19.99.

If you want it on a shelf, Lost in Cult is taking orders for physical PS5 and Switch 2 editions.

The game is rated M for Mature for blood and gore, strong language, and violence, so it’s one for after the kids are in bed.

If you grew up on fixed-camera scares and still have a soft spot for chunky pixels, Tenebris Somnia is an easy one to queue up for a dark October night.
