Steam Scream V is live, and the fifth Steam Scream event runs until November 2 at 10am PT with a long list of horror games marked down. Some of the prices are great. But before you hit buy, check GOG, because a handful of the best horror games on PC are cheaper there right now, and the GOG copies are DRM-free installers you keep forever.
We went through both US stores on Monday morning, right after the sale started. Here’s where each game is cheapest.
Cheaper on GOG
None of these five has a Steam discount on its standard edition right now, but GOG has all of them at big markdowns.
| Game | GOG (DRM-free) | Steam | Regular price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkwood | $1.99 | $19.99 | $19.99 |
| Call of Cthulhu | $2.99 | $19.99 | $19.99 |
| Vampyr | $3.99 | $39.99 | $39.99 |
| Dead Space (2008) | $7.99 | $19.99 | $19.99 |
| Silent Hill 2 | $27.99 | $69.99 | $69.99 |
Darkwood at $1.99 is the one to grab. It’s a top-down survival horror game set in a forest that closes in a little more every night, and it’s still one of the most unsettling things you can play on PC. Dead Space at $7.99 is the original 2008 game, not the remake, and it holds up better than you’d expect.
Silent Hill 2 is Bloober Team’s remake from 2024, and $27.99 on GOG is $42 less than the standard edition on Steam. Steam’s sale only covers the Digital Deluxe Edition, at $31.99, which is also the price of the Deluxe Edition on GOG.
Same price on both stores
SOMA, Amnesia: The Bunker, Ghostwire: Tokyo and Metro 2033 Redux cost the same on Steam and GOG. If you don’t mind which launcher it lives in, the GOG copy is the one you can back up and install offline.

| Game | GOG (DRM-free) | Steam | Regular price |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOMA | $5.99 | $5.99 | $29.99 |
| Amnesia: The Bunker | $4.99 | $4.99 | $24.99 |
| Ghostwire: Tokyo | $14.99 | $14.99 | $59.99 |
| Metro 2033 Redux | $1.99 | $1.99 | $19.99 |
SOMA at $5.99 is the pick here. Frictional’s underwater sci-fi horror game is less about jump scares and more about the questions it leaves you with, and it’s 80% off. Metro 2033 Redux at $1.99 is worth a look too, since the Redux games just got a free next-gen update on PC that uncaps the frame rate.
Steam only (or cheaper on Steam)
Capcom’s Resident Evil games aren’t on GOG, so Steam is the place for these, and the prices are some of the best in the sale. The Capcom discounts run a day longer, until November 3.
| Game | Steam sale price | Regular price |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 4 | $9.99 | $39.99 |
| Resident Evil Village | $9.99 | $39.99 |
| Resident Evil 2 | $7.99 | $39.99 |
| Resident Evil 3 | $7.99 | $39.99 |
| Alien: Isolation | $9.99 | $39.99 |
| The Quarry | $5.99 | $59.99 |
| Dead Island 2 | $4.99 | $49.99 |
| Outlast | $1.49 | $14.99 |
| Inscryption | $7.99 | $19.99 |
| SIGNALIS | $13.99 | $19.99 |
| Dead by Daylight | $7.99 | $19.99 |
| Phasmophobia | $13.99 | $19.99 |
Alien: Isolation is the clearest Steam win. It’s $9.99 on Steam and full price, $39.99, on GOG. Outlast is also cheaper on Steam at $1.49, against $3.75 on GOG.
If you only buy one thing from this list, make it Resident Evil 4. It’s an action horror game that’s still a blast to replay, and $9.99 is hard to beat. The Quarry at $5.99 is the best deal for a group, since it’s a choose-your-path horror story that works well with friends on the couch passing the controller around.
Inscryption’s discount runs until November 9, so there’s no rush on that one.
Before you buy
All prices are US prices we checked on October 26, and they can change before the sale ends. GOG doesn’t list an end date for its current horror discounts, and its own Halloween sale could start later this week, so it’s worth checking GOG again if you’re on the fence.
The full Steam Scream V sale is on the Steam store until November 2 at 10am PT. Grab a couple of cheap ones from the GOG list and one big Resident Evil, and your Halloween is sorted.
