Best Steam Frame games: official Valve photo of the left and right Steam Frame Controllers

Steam Frame can play your whole Steam library from your gaming PC, but the best Steam Frame games to start with run on the headset by itself, no PC needed. Every pick carries Valve’s Steam Frame Verified badge, which means Valve tested it for controls, text, and performance on the headset. Half-Life: Alyx comes free with every Steam Frame, so it gets its own bonus spot at the end instead of taking a numbered slot. If you’re still deciding on the headset, start with our Steam Frame price and specs guide.

Most of these are discounted on Steam until Thursday, October 8 at 10 a.m. PT, so sale prices are listed next to the regular ones. None of them are sold on GOG, so the Steam store is the place to buy.

1. Beat Saber

Beat Saber is still the easiest way to show someone what VR feels like. You slice blocks in time with the music and duck under walls, and it works as a workout, a party game, or a quick ten minutes before dinner. With no cable to step on, it’s even easier to pass the headset around. It comes with over 60 songs, and music packs are sold separately.

Beat Saber on Steam: $19.99. Released.

2. Moss

Moss puts you in a storybook world as the Reader, guiding a small mouse named Quill through puzzles and fights while you reach into the scene to move things around. It plays well seated, and the diorama-style levels show off how sharp Frame’s displays are. If you finish it, Moss II VR is also Steam Frame Verified, and there’s a new non-VR remake called Moss: The Forgotten Relic.

Moss on Steam: $19.99, on sale for $9.99. Released. Rated E10+.

3. I Expect You To Die 3: Cog in the Machine

You play a secret agent with telekinesis, stuck in rooms full of traps, and your job is to solve your way out before something goes wrong. It’s an escape room with a sense of humor, and you can play the whole thing from a chair. Schell Games says the entire trilogy is Steam Frame Verified, so you can start with the first game if you’d rather go in order.

I Expect You To Die 3: Cog in the Machine on Steam: $24.99, on sale for $12.49. Released.

4. Job Simulator

Robots have taken every human job, and Job Simulator lets you try “jobbing” in silly versions of an office, a kitchen, a convenience store, and a garage. You can throw things, mess up orders, and break stuff on purpose. It’s one of the best first games for kids and VR newcomers. Owlchemy Labs’ follow-up, Vacation Simulator, is Steam Frame Verified too.

Job Simulator on Steam: $19.99. Released. Rated E10+ for crude humor.

5. The Last Clockwinder

The Last Clockwinder turns your own movements into puzzles. You record yourself doing a task, a clockwork clone repeats it, and you build up a whole crew of yourselves to bring an ancient tree full of rare plants back to life. It’s relaxing, smart, and different from anything you’d play on a flat screen.

The Last Clockwinder on Steam: $24.99, on sale for $7.49. Released.

6. Red Matter 2

Red Matter 2 is a sci-fi puzzle adventure set in off-world facilities with a Cold War mystery behind it. Its tools feel physical in your hands, and the detailed environments are a good test of the headset’s lenses. Expect a little sci-fi combat, but most of your time goes to exploring and solving puzzles.

Red Matter 2 on Steam: $29.99, on sale for $17.99. Released.

7. Eleven Table Tennis

Eleven Table Tennis is about as close to real ping pong as VR gets, with physics that reward actual technique. You can practice solo or play people online. It needs a little open space, and the tracked controllers make your paddle feel right where it should be.

Eleven Table Tennis on Steam: $19.99, on sale for $11.99. Released.

8. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

One person wears the headset and sees a ticking bomb. Everyone else has the manual but can’t see the bomb, so you have to talk it out fast. It’s a great pick for game night because the people outside the headset get just as much to do. You can also play it without VR.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes on Steam: $14.99, on sale for $7.49. Released.

9. Space Pirate Trainer

Space Pirate Trainer is an arcade shooter where you fight waves of robot drones with blasters and a shield. It’s simple to learn, it gets you moving, and it’s fun to trade the headset and chase each other’s best scores. Clear some floor space before you start.

Space Pirate Trainer on Steam: $14.99, on sale for $5.99. Released.

10. Puzzling Places

Puzzling Places is a relaxed 3D jigsaw game where you put together detailed miniature models of real places from around the world. Turning pieces in your hands is more satisfying than it sounds, and there’s no timer pushing you. It’s a calm one to wind down with, and it works without VR too.

Puzzling Places – 3D Jigsaw Sim on Steam: $7.99, on sale for $6.79. Released.

Bonus: Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx is still the best reason to own a VR headset, and Valve puts a copy in the box with every Steam Frame. You play as Alyx Vance fighting the Combine in City 17, with gravity gloves that let you pull items toward you and physics that make every room feel touchable. It’s rated M for blood and violence, and it isn’t on the Verified list yet, so try it before you lean on it as your first game on the headset.

Half-Life: Alyx on Steam: included with Steam Frame. Released. Rated M.

Valve keeps adding games to the Verified list, and Steam’s filter showed 204 of them on October 7. Check your own library against Steam’s Great on Frame page before you buy anything new, because you may already own a few good ones.
