Gears of War: E-Day early access opened October 1 at 8:00 a.m. PT for Premium Edition owners and Game Pass subscribers who bought the Premium Upgrade. Full launch is October 6 at 8:00 a.m. PT on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam. There is no PlayStation version. Day-one Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass get the Standard Edition on the 6th – not the early window unless you add the upgrade.
Five extra days plus cosmetic packs for Premium, or wait until Tuesday on Game Pass. Official note and launch trailer: Xbox Wire – E-Day early access.
What you are actually buying into
E-Day is The Coalition’s origin story set fourteen years before the first Gears. Young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago get dropped into Emergence Day – the Locust coming up through Sera for the first time. Tone is darker and more horror-leaning than the later war-epic games, but it is still cover shooters, squad chatter, and Locust pressure. Keep expectations mature (M-rated intensity) without treating the trailer as a gore checklist.
Campaign runs solo, two-player split-screen on console, or up to four online. Online multiplayer needs a Game Pass tier that includes multiplayer. Cloud play is listed for Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW.
Multiplayer sits on two pillars. Horde Siege is the big PvE swing: larger city maps, classed four-player squads (Assault, Marksman, Medic, Breacher), shared objectives, and a push toward extraction. Versus is refined 4v4 with Ranked and Social playlists, plus modernized movement (jump, vault, slide) on top of classic cover. Built from scratch in Unreal Engine 5 for 4K and up to 60 fps on supported displays.
Standard is $69.99; Premium is $99.99. The Premium Edition Upgrade is $30 if you own Standard or play on Game Pass and want the early window. Premium adds up to five days early, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs (Emergence Pack at launch), and 1,000 Iron.
Is the early access gate worth $30?
Only if you already know you will live in Horde or Versus this week, or you hate waiting while Discord lights up with spoilers and loadout talk. Five days is real time – especially for a co-op shooter – but Game Pass day one on October 6 removes the “I need to own it to play it” pressure that used to force day-one buys.
Campaign-first and patient? Skip the upgrade. Squad already picking Siege classes tonight? Thirty bucks for early access plus cosmetics is the clean path.
Platforms: Xbox Series and PC (Microsoft Store and Steam), with Xbox Play Anywhere progression. Still no PS5 – plan co-op around that.
Beyond the calendar, the pitch is the UE5 rebuild and Horde Siege scale: classic Gears weight, more fluid movement, a bigger PvE sandbox, and a campaign that wants atmosphere as much as chainsaws. Early access just lets Premium folks decide first.
I am waiting for the Game Pass drop unless a friend group is already in. Five days is nice; Tuesday is free for subscribers.
