The Metro Redux Next-Gen Update is out now on PC for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux, and if you already own either game on GOG, Steam or Epic, it should download as a free update. It removes the frame rate cap, adds DLSS and FSR, and fixes a long list of save, crash and resolution bugs. PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store version on PC get it on October 29, and Microsoft Store players should know their saves won’t carry over.
Deep Silver posted the full patch notes when the update went live on October 22. If you don’t own them yet and want DRM-free copies, both games are on GOG: Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux. They’re also on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
What changes on PC
The PC version on GOG, Steam and Epic gets these upgrades:
- Unbound frame rate, so your hardware sets the limit, plus fixes for bugs that showed up at high frame rates.
- Upscaling: 4A’s own TSR on any GPU, DLSS on NVIDIA and FSR on AMD.
- Screen Space Global Illumination, more geometry and texture detail, 4K texture support and improved materials.
- Better animation and sound, with spatial audio support.
- Controller support: DualSense adaptive triggers and Xbox controller impulse triggers.
- A mouse fix for horizontal and vertical sensitivity not matching.
- A power-optimized mode for Xbox Ally and Ally X handhelds and the Microsoft Store version.
- Advanced PhysX is now on by default.
There’s no ray tracing. Plaion’s FAQ says that would need a much deeper rework of the renderer, and the team is busy with Metro 2039. It also says this isn’t a remaster or a port to the current 4A Engine. It’s a quality-of-life upgrade for people who already own the games.
If you’re curious how FSR works on older AMD cards, our FSR 4.1 explainer covers that.
The fixes long-time players asked for
Deep Silver calls these community-reported fixes, and they apply on every platform unless noted. The ones most likely to matter to you:
- Modern resolutions like 1440p and 4K now show up, instead of the game topping out at old resolutions like 1600×1200. A PC hotfix after launch fixed more cases where higher resolutions weren’t detected.
- Fullscreen works again, and stretched images on high-resolution monitors are fixed.
- The game no longer makes a checkpoint when you’re almost out of filter time, so you can’t get stuck in a save that suffocates you over and over.
- Steam Cloud uploads your saves again, and on Xbox Series X|S, saves are more stable after Quick Resume and cloud syncing.
- On PS5, a save corruption bug that locked later chapters and reset your inventory after the console had been off for a long time is fixed.
- The DualSense controller is recognized in the Steam version, and default keyboard bindings are back.
- Crashes on modern PCs (Windows 11, AMD GPUs and high refresh rate displays) are reduced, along with freezes on splash screens and during chapter loads.
Each game also gets its own list of fixed progress blockers. In Metro 2033 Redux that covers chapters like Outpost, Library and D6, plus the ending cutscene not playing. In Metro Last Light Redux it covers The Garden, the Revolution chapter, the Venice armory and the Khan DLC. Deep Silver’s post lists every one if you hit a specific bug.
How to tell you have it on PC
Deep Silver pushed a PC hotfix after launch that fixes more resolution detection problems, the Steam overlay disappearing, the missing Deep Silver Account comic reward, Epic achievements and some Ukrainian text. If you’re on the hotfixed build, both games show version 3.0.0.19 on GOG, build 26159616 (Metro 2033 Redux) or 26159638 (Last Light Redux) on Steam, and 0.1.0.28 on Epic. If your resolution list still tops out at an old setting, check that you’re on that build first.
Updated PC specs
The requirements are still modest:

Consoles, the Microsoft Store and Switch
PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S get the update on October 29. The Microsoft Store version on Windows updates the same day, with one catch: your saves don’t carry over, and Deep Silver recommends starting a new game. To make up for it, chapter select is unlocked, so you can start any chapter with a default loadout. Japan is scheduled for November, though Plaion says plans there are still being finalized. If you own Metro Redux on Switch, Plaion says the update is only coming to PC, Xbox and PlayStation at this time.
Plaion says the update is free for “most owners” and that some versions may not be compatible, without saying which. If it doesn’t show up, check your store page.
A comic for linking your account
Both games now support Deep Silver Account linking. Scan the QR code in game, sign in, and you get an exclusive comic book. Each Metro game you link (Metro 2033 Redux, Last Light Redux or Metro Exodus) also counts as one entry in a contest for a copy of Metro 2039, which launches February 4, 2027. It’s optional, and you don’t need it to get the update.
If you’ve had these two sitting in your library for years, this is a good excuse to play them again before Metro 2039.
