Here is the consumer tip for Tuesday, October 6, 2026: a GameStop used PS5 Pro can cost more than a brand-new unit at Sony’s official U.S. price. If you can find a new console at MSRP, that is the better buy. Do not assume “used” means cheaper.

What GameStop is listing today

On GameStop’s PS5 Pro product pages, a pre-owned digital (all-digital) console is listed at $1,399.99 (Pro members see $1,329.99). That listing showed as in stock when we checked this afternoon PT. The broader parent product page shows a $899.99 to $1,399.99 range across conditions and was marked currently unavailable online.

Secondary reports of a leaked internal memo also describe disc-drive (Physical) pre-owned configurations at up to $1,499.99. We did not find a separate live GameStop Physical listing at that exact figure during our check, so the $1,499.99 figure stays attributed to those reports, not to a second storefront confirmation.

What new should cost

Sony’s official U.S. recommended retail price for a new PS5 Pro is $899.99, per the March 27, 2026 PlayStation Blog price note (effective April 2, 2026). PlayStation Direct shows the console around that MSRP and was marked currently unavailable when we checked. Watch who is selling (first-party vs marketplace) before you tap buy.

That math is the tip. A GameStop pre-owned digital Pro at $1,399.99 sits about $500 above Sony’s new MSRP. Paying more for used only makes sense if you have no realistic path to a new unit and you still want the hardware now.

Why this is happening (reported, not confirmed)

Outlets including Push Square, TechSpot, and The FPS Review describe a leaked GameStop internal memo. In that reported text, the chain tells stores the pre-owned console will carry a higher price than new, and that “this is intentional.”

GameStop has not published a matching confirmation we can cite. Some secondary coverage also notes date language in the circulating memo that does not line up cleanly with what already appears on gamestop.com today. Live storefront prices are the hard fact. The memo wording is reported color.

Stock pressure is the practical context. New PS5 Pro inventory has been tight, and demand is climbing ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19, 2026 (Thursday), per Rockstar’s official page. When new shelves are empty, used listings become the only in-stock option, and retailers can set those prices freely. Push Square framed the move as the retailer effectively scalping its own used hardware. That is their editorial take. Our read for shoppers is simpler: compare the sticker to MSRP before you pay a premium for pre-owned.

What to do if you still want a Pro

Check PlayStation Direct and major retailers for new stock at $899.99. Restocks move fast. Treat GameStop pre-owned as a last resort, not a deal, while digital used sits near $1,400. If you only need disc support, remember the Pro is digital by default and a disc drive is a separate accessory. Skip panic buys for GTA VI day one if your current PS5 already plays the game. The Pro is a performance upgrade, not a platform gate. Standard PS5 owners still get the full PlayStation Plus October lineup, and new PS5 releases such as Star Wars: Galactic Racer do not require a Pro.

If a used Pro is hundreds above new MSRP, keep hunting for a new unit instead of treating a $1,399.99 pre-owned tag as normal. Watch Direct and first-party retailer drops, and only pay the used premium if you truly cannot wait for restock.
